He also appears in the 1901 census in Hamilton boarding, together with his elder brother Alfred, and working as miners.

James Renshaw, who was born on 13th November, 1877, entered the coal mining industry in the West of Scotland at the age of 14 and, when he came to Kelty and started work at Aitken Colliery in 1901, had already 10 years' coal mining experience to his credit. ?Like many men who entered the Company’s employment at Aitken Colliery, James has never wanted to change to any other colliery, and now, in his 45th year at the colliery, having relinquished underground work as a stripper, packer and developer only three years ago, he is at present employed on the picking tables. ?During war years. l9l4-l9l8.
